The Art of Buying
in Outfits

LOVE, LEAH / CATEGORY TIPS/ PUBLISHED: AUG-18-2019

Know why you haven't worn those items sitting in your closet yet? Because you haven’t made an outfit of it. Trust me, you need to put those pieces together!

So many of us think that we just need a new shirt, or need some different pants. Maybe you do. But does every morning begin with that long stare into your closet to decide what to wear among the racks and shelves of wonderful, beautiful, hanging clothes? If so, do you think that daily problem on choosing what to wear will be solved with adding more?

Have you ever really bought in “outfits” ? Or a few key pieces that in combination make many great outfits? I used to never shop that way and I caught myself always looking for something new to buy and feel good in. I did it for years and after all that time I ended up converting an entire room into my closet. Know what? In my mind I still had nothing to wear.

It was a girls trip to Las Vegas many years ago that I learned to shop in outfits and styles. My friend couldn’t understand why I was buying a zillion random things, and asked me how am I going to wear them. "I love them", I said. "But how will you wear them?" she asked. Gulp. I knew what she was getting at. Ultimately, it’s an entire outfit that you have in your mind after you spot something to buy. Its not just one thing (unless its a dress, but even then you want the matching accessories and shoes, right!). The picture in your mind is the entire ensemble, the look, the style. She knew what she was talking about, and she was right.

I’ll admit it easier said than done so here are a few key clothing pieces that you can wear so many ways to make multiple outfits!
  • Blazer | Kimono Cardigan | Jean Jacket
  • Neutral Coloured Tank Tops
  • Leggings | Jeans | Pants | Skirt

Actually putting clothing pieces together to create a new outfit gives a whole other feeling of satisfaction. It also doesn’t mean the whole outfit has to be new, maybe you have something in your closet that you haven’t worn yet. Hint hint. Try putting one of those shirts together with an accent colour of pants or skirt. You might like it! Stripes with floral. Mustard yellows with deep navy. Blush pink and grey. Go ahead, create your unique style.

Capsule Wardrobes

The concept of building a capsule wardrobe has been popular this year and rightly so because it can simplify your outfit making decisions greatly. (It might also help to make more room in your closet!) There is no set size to how many articles of clothing you can set in a capsule wardrobe because its all up to you, your lifestyle, and your love of fashion.

If you have never heard of a capsule wardrobe, do some research, you might be surprised in what changes you are willing to try to make to adapt some simplicity into your closet.

Capsule Wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don't go out of fashion. These can be expanded for seasonal pieces.

I'll break it down to you in a few easy steps:

1. Go through all of your clothes. Yes each and every piece. I'm going to suggest a little Marie Kondo and say to split your clothes into those that bring you joy, and those that don't. Donate or toss the clothes you don't want to keep.

2. Colour selection. Choose a base colour (black, navy, grey for example), then select some neutrals that go well with the base colour too. Easy right?

3. The fun part - select your accent colours! Pink, blue, red, green, whatever colours you want!

4. Add some pattern and texture. Stripes, florals, polkadots, prints; whatever suits you. I suggest trying to step outside your comfort zone in this one, you might try something new that you love!

5. Find out whats missing from your wardrobe and go find it!

Step 4 of a capsule wardrobe is to find some texture and patterns like these Shits | Tops available at: www.stylespheresyw.com.
